Sacred Heart Parish Pastoral Council
January 8, 2023
Council members present: Alex Amado, Rob Cassleman, Trisha Doumit, Fr. Steve Dublinski, Bill Engels Jr. (youth member), Lorraine Farrand on Zoom, Robert Harris, Jim Lincoln, Marie Parrish, Eric Patera (chair), Char Snekvik, Charlotte Worthy, and Sandra Gallardo-Cook (Spanish Council member) on Zoom. Mary Sutherland, parish secretary.
Opening Prayer - Our Father.
Building plans: Don Snekvik made a model of what a church could look like at the Davis Way property. Char Snekvik brought it to the meeting. His proposal uses pole construction, the same as the existing Pullman Heating and Electric building, for the additions to the building. One large extension for the worship space, and one small one for the entrance. That would be less expensive than normal construction, and is very durable. The model incorporates the current church doors. There is room for everything, and it is all accessible. The property has not sold yet. The buyers have to sell their business and property in Seattle first. We don’t know the deadline for that.
Spanish communities at Sacred Heart: Spanish Pastoral Council members Sandra Gallardo-Cook and Alex Amado (also a pastoral council member) were present to help plan Spanish and bilingual services for the next six months, in a way that helps the parish become unified. We need to look at how holidays are celebrated. The Spanish morning Christmas Mass was bigger than the English morning Mass.
The Spanish community is excited to have Spanish Mass twice a month, and to have bilingual Masses. They also really would like to have Ash Wednesday and Easter services in Spanish; that used to happen at St. Thomas More at WSU, but it has been a number of years.
The council can provide guidance; the parish staff will finalize the details. There was discussion about whether to make the children’s Ash Wednesday service or the Ash Wednesday evening Mass bilingual. If Spanish-speaking parents are bringing their children, that would be a good time, otherwise Mass might be better. There was no definite conclusion.
The Easter Vigil was not emphasized when older parishioners were growing up, but the Church considers it the most important Mass of the year. It is very hard to have two. Would Spanish-speakers attend if it were bilingual? Is it too late and too long for children? Is it better to have a Spanish Easter Mass at 1 pm?
What does a bilingual Mass look like? It does not mean that we repeat everything in each language. Whole sections, such as the Offertory, are in one language, and other sections, such as the Eucharistic Prayer, are in the other. Readings can alternate languages. The homily is problematic – do you give a short one in each language? Or print out the homily in the language that isn’t spoken? We can use the “Ordinary of the Mass: booklets that were used for the Spanish Mass before we got the missalettes as a template for a program for people to use so they can follow along easily. Alex said that some of our Spanish-speakers cannot read in either language.
What about Holy Thursday and Good Friday? The consensus was not to try to do too much at first; we can add a Spanish reading and song to those services this year. Fr. Steve can manage an extra Mass, or a bilingual Mass, if he has help with the translating.
We need people in music ministry at the Spanish Masses. Also, a way for people to commit to being there to read, altar serve, etc.
Spanish Language lessons: Sandra is willing to help English-speakers learn to read aloud in Spanish. The parish staff is interested in learning/improving their Spanish.
Parish Directory: It is close to print. Most of the text is bilingual.
International Mardi Gras: This is a potluck put on by the parish the Saturday before Ash Wednesday, February 18 this year. It is after the 4:30 pm Mass. Everyone is invited to bring food from their culture. Council members should mix with the different groups.
Closing prayer: Glory Be.

Faith Formation Board Meeting
Tuesday, January 10, 2023, Sacred Heart social hall
Linea Johnson, Kat Harris, Dave Schneider, Betty Klover, Jane Hommel, Wendy McCann, Cory Dixon, Tammy Barry, L Heidenreich, and Angela Nelson
Faith Formation Report: The Christmas pageant went well. Jill Patera did an excellent job taking into account different kids and assigning parts. There weren’t any drop-ins; in fact, family attendance seemed much less than in the past. Fr. Steve didn’t call the kids up front for a children’s sermon because of all the flu going around.
First reconciliation went well.
A Spiritual Autobiography group for adults starts this Thursday morning, beginning with Therese of Lisieux. People can drop in for one or two sessions if they can’t come regularly. There may be interest in a future group for people that work during the day.
Youth Group Report: The Youth group hosted an Epiphany party on Sunday Jan. 8. Two kids who’ve never attended YG came, along with four kids from Colfax. The youth seemed to gel well and have a great time, and Colfax plans to invite our kids to events, including an after-dark Easter egg hunt. In the future we could look to including more youth from surrounding areas, for instance from Moscow.
CYC will be a one-day event on March 4 at Gonzaga Prep. Linea hopes to take a group of kids, with possibility of an overnight trip that could include service and/or a fun activity.
Black history month and racial healing: Last year we had Saint cards in the back, which L. sent Theresa, and a crossword puzzle people could turn in for a free book. L. will email us a few saints to pick from and make a crossword puzzle for this year, with a new book so people can win a prize again. There was an idea to keep the crossword puzzle thing going if people are interested. Cory mentioned a need for do-it-yourself faith formation in the summer.
Kat shared the idea of investing in a painting of a black saint for the church. Do black children coming to church see themselves in the pictures, and in heaven? Maybe not. Everyone liked this idea. In the past, Fr. Steve participated in MLK events in the community and on campus, which people appreciated, but the event is different this year.
Lent/Easter: Lent goes from Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, to Thursday April 6. The Catholic Daughters do the Easter egg hunt with help from youth, and Tammy will read. Several people are interested in a fish fry on Fridays tradition—initially we could do this twice, once for each month? Dave will ask the Knights.
Other: Tammy will lead a Bible study. Fr. Steve would like to announce this, or even begin, on Sunday Jan 22. (Enthroning the Word of God). Wendy will be gone next month so Jane will do opening prayer. Pray for WSU students and faculty, especially those in the criminal justice department.
Meeting for next month: February 7.

Members research charities and decide which ones will receive money from the parish. In 1990 Sacred Heart's Pastoral Council decided the parish would spend a percent of its income on charity, gradually working up to 10%. It established the Caritas committee to disburse the funds. The percentage has varied over the years.
