Members serve in an advisory role to the parish priest. They plan for the future of the parish, review parish policies, promote faith formation and parish activities, coordinate parish groups, and accept and consider comments and suggestions from parishioners.

Minutes: Sacred Heart Pastoral Council Zoom Meeting -
February 13, 2021
Council members present: Alex Amado, Rob Cassleman, Fr. Steve Dublinski, Lorraine Farrand, Aurora Horstkamp, Kevin Owens, Jim Lincoln, Eric Patera, Mary Schweitzer, Char Snekvik, and Charlotte Worthy. Bill Engels for the Community Outreach Commission, and Mary Sutherland, parish secretary
Opening Prayer - Our Father.
Sunday Mass February 14: Fr. Steve and the council discussed where to have Mass on February 14. The consensus was that it would be too cold for most people to be in the movie theater lot. Mass will be livestreamed from the church with Communion in the church parking lot from 10:30 to 11 am.
Community Outreach Commission Report: The report is attached, and posted on the website. Our parish PREPARES group would like to provide larger and/or more expensive items such as car seats and cribs for families. These are not available at local thrift stores. The group wondered where to store them, and whether a parishioner had a storage unit with extra space. However, Mary Sutherland noted that there is plenty of room in the basement of the parish house
Family Promise is using motels for families, but is looking into going back to providing overnight-only accommodations at area churches again.
Food for the Community Action Center can be dropped of in the basket at the church entrance.
Our Helping Hands group has been delivering meals. Contact Sue McNamara for meals or to help.
Action Alerts are sent out about upcoming executions, right to life issues, etc. Contact the parish office to receive these by text or email.
The February 11 Climate Change Presentation on Zoom with Dr. Mark Wensnahan was very successful. A link to the video of the presentation is in the attached report and in the February 21 bulletin. There is a follow-up Zoom meeting on climate change on March 24.
About 15 Sacred Heart parishioners attended the virtual 2021 Eastern Washington Legislative Conference on January 30. They were recognized for their attendance. Participants were asked if they could bring their congregations into the NAACP, but people would have to sign up individually.
The Trex recycling program is going strong. We have almost qualified for our fourth bench. That will mean we’ve collection one ton of plastic. We will give away the third and fourth benches. Possibly to daycares; they need to be someplace where they are not easily stolen, as they are difficult to secure.
Interfaith Warming Shelter: A council member asked if there are any plans to reinstate the warming shelter for the homeless that was run by the city for a short time a couple years ago. Fr. Steve replied that they realized they need an organization focused on that issue, able to raise money, and get the business community on board.
New IT Committee, under the Finance & Administration Commission: The council discussed the need for this committee. Fr. Steve doesn’t have the depth of knowledge to make all the necessary decisions in this area. We need compatible equipment, and people who will think ahead about how the various systems will work together and be kept secure. The consensus of the council was to add an IT committee to the parish structure.
Faith Formation Commission: The Safety Committee decided it’s not worth the risk to have Faith Formation classes in person in our classrooms before the end of the school year. The classrooms do not provide adequate air flow. The Faith Formation Board is sponsoring the Eucharistic Miracles exhibit in Spanish and English in the social hall and hallways March 13 & 14.
Stations of the Cross video: Theresa Paul & Fr. Steve are working on a YouTube video for people to watch.
Memorial Fund for Dan Jinguji: A parishioner made a contribution in Dan’s name and asked us to start a memorial fund, with the money going to Faith Formation at Sacred Heart, since that was one of his passions.
It would be for something special, not day-to-day expenses. The Faith Formation Board will decide.
Liturgy & Worship: Holy Week – People didn’t care for watching the Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil services from the Spokane Cathedral last year. We need something local. The Vatican is asking parishes to skip the washing of the feet and big procession on Holy Thursday, and to have people venerate the Cross in place on Good Friday.
After some discussion, services may look like this:
Criteria for returning to indoor Masses in the church: There are still too many moving pieces to allow us to come up with a clear standard. The UK Covid variant is in the state now. There are still way too many unvaccinated people. We still need to be careful. Char will work on a draft of a letter to parishioners about this and send it to Fr. Steve.
Communion at assisted living: Deacon Jim has had both vaccines, and will now be allowed to take Communion and ashes to our Bishop Place residents on Ash Wednesday. He will wear PPE.
Spanish Community and Council: Alex reported that Anna Park sends her the homily and Praying at Home in Spanish every week. Alex sends those out by email and sometimes posts them on Facebook. The Spanish-speaking people who attend the parking lot Masses like having the first reading in Spanish. Fr. Steve noted that his homily has Spanish subtitles, and that a child made her first Reconciliation in Spanish. That was his first time doing that, and it went pretty well.
Fr. Steve would like to have a Zoom meeting with Alex and the other members of the Hispanic Pastoral Council. One of them doesn’t speak English but comes to Mass every Sunday. Alex will translate for her. Mary Sutherland will help Alex set up a meeting.
Members discussed whether we could have someone reading in Spanish during the livestreamed Mass or put subtitles on the YouTube video of the Mass. Both would be difficult, unless we had the full text. Fr. Steve would like to have a Spanish Mass outdoors on the lawn when we are able to do that again. When we do have Spanish Mass, we need to be patient if not very many people come at first. It may take a while.
Dealing with coronavirus: Aurora noted that we should keep doing what we’re doing. Double masking is a good idea now. The vaccines will protect, but we still need to be careful. There has not been a jump in cases since WSU started again. We appreciate that. Right now may be the calm before the storm due to the variants.
Parking lot Communion & hand sanitizer distribution: Some people in the back of the parking lot never received Communion at the February 7 Mass. The Eucharistic ministers and ushers need to meet briefly before Mass to figure out who is going where and make sure all the rows are covered.
The next meeting is Saturday, March 13, at 10 AM on Zoom.
Closing prayer: Glory Be

Members research charities and decide which ones will receive money from the parish. In 1990 Sacred Heart's Pastoral Council decided the parish would spend a percent of its income on charity, gradually working up to 10%. It established the Caritas committee to disburse the funds. The percentage has varied over the years.
